The Leo New Moon: A time for Quiet Reflection and New Beginnings

New Moon Facts

  • The New Moon occurs at 12° Leo.

  • The Sabian symbol for this degree speaks of a time for quiet reflection and the “distillation of one’s many life experiences into wisdom that brings true peace”.

  • Mercury is currently retrograde and was stationary at the time of the New Moon.

  • The New Moon is also sextile Jupiter.

The New Moon at 12° Leo + sextile Jupiter.

This week, the soli-lunar cycle is in creative and dynamic Leo, asking us to look at how we can find ways to shine. When I look at any New Moon, I also use the Sabian symbols to help guide me into the more subtle ways we might think of how we can act on the new impulses being born at this time.

The Sabian symbol for 12° Leo is one of quiet reflection. It encourages us to take time out to examine how our life experiences might be used to create wisdom, which is how one can attain true peace.

Mercury is Retrograde

This process is furthered by the fact that Mercury was stationary at the New Moon and has since turned retrograde. All too often, people regard Mercury retrograde as either inconvenient or, worse, a real blockage to “getting things done.”

But Mercury retrograde is a much-needed process for finishing current cycles and reflecting on the past four months, allowing us to be open to new ideas emerging at the Inferior conjunction of Sun/Mercury in about ten days.

New Moon Sextile Jupiter

Let’s add one more significant aspect to this New Moon chart. The New Moon itself is sextile Jupiter. Whatever Jupiter touches will be expanded in such a way as to encourage us to open to new ideas and concepts.

Thus, this New Moon is about taking time out to deeply reflect on our priorities and look deeply at the implications of what we have been learning.

While we must act on whatever matters our lives demand, these actions ought to be out of necessity. We also must honor whatever time we can take to reflect on our past decisions and become open to new, sometimes radical, ways of thinking.

This is how we can use this period to discover ways in which we can shine and feel the Sun’s rays lighting us up. Can reflection also be an act of shining? This is a wonderful time to find out.

Astrology Q + A: Does Astrology Predict the Future?

I am often asked if astrology can predict the future, and I am aware that many astrologers believe it can. However, I have not seen any evidence that astrology can make concrete predictions.

Additionally, I think it’s important to consider what it would mean if astrology could predict the future. Would it not imply that we live in a clockwork, mechanical reality where we have no free will?

The essential question for astrologers is this: where do we have free will choices within the archetypal patterns of our birth chart?

Symbolism of Gemini – The Twins

By Kimberly Maxwell

Art by Daniel Eskridge

Gemini’s symbol is derived from the Latin word for “twin” and is associated with the story of the twin sons of the God Zeus: the mortal Castor and the immortal Pollux. Separated after Castor’s death, the twins became forever united in the cosmic stars as the constellation of Gemini.

On an archetypal level, the Twins correspond with the principal of duality and polarity, which sets up the need to enter a process of integration to create Unity and Wholeness. Gemini needs to discover connections between all it experiences to understand its place in the universe. It recognizes the connection between light and shadow, spirit and matter, body and soul, ad infinitum. The Twins perceive each other as mirrors to their inner world. They may seem separate and opposing in their unique expressions, yet they are connected through consciousness.

Gemini, an intellectual and curious air sign, represents the third stage in the process of individual development where a person begins to explore and relate to its environment. Gemini voraciously gathers information through research and interactions to find ways to reveal the interconnectedness of everything. It is motivated to share its impressive databank of knowledge by exchanging ideas through communications and trade. As the first air sign of the Zodiac, Gemini symbolizes our connection with others by the mere fact we all breath the same air.

The Transpersonal astrologer, Dane Rudhyar, received an archetypally related vision for the symbol of Gemini as representing two pillars, the roof and floor of the gate to the temple of wisdom. This Gate is the place to pause, to accept, and to know the peace which alone can ensure our success in searching for true connection, understanding and wholeness. Gemini, ruled by the “Messenger of the Gods” Mercury, teaches us to stop our tense striving so we can learn to deeply listen within. In the focused power of total stillness, we become open to receiving messages from Cosmic Consciousness which can lead us to experience total Unity with all existence.

Inspiration for your Journey

As our technology races ahead at an ever-accelerating pace, how are those of us on a spiritual path affected by this? In this short video, Gregg Braden explores the question of what it means to be fully human and whether we are sacrificing this essence before we even realize it. Should we not explore who we are in our essential nature before we launch blindly into integrating new technology into our bodies? I am presenting this short in case you might want to listen to the complete interview.

Correction on Gabor Maté’s Chart

In our previous newsletter, we incorrectly referred to the aspect between Maté’s Sun and Chiron as a square. It is actually an exact trine. The corrected passage is below:

Astrologically, Maté’s Sun at 15° is an exact trine to Chiron at 15° Virgo. While there are other planets also aspecting Chiron, this is sufficient to make my point that Maté is truly an exemplary example of how we all might deal with our personal pain and trauma.
