Chiron's Influence in Gabor Maté's Chart
In Part 1 of my description of Chiron, I focused on my own personal process of discovering the nature of Chiron. However, for it to be truly on point, one must see it operating in the charts of many others. Now, I would like to go more deeply into the chart of Gabor Maté, who is an excellent example of someone with a dominant Chiron.
Gabor Maté’s Background and Personal Struggles
Maté is a Canadian physician with a background in child development. He then noticed that early childhood trauma could have lifelong impacts on the mental and physical health of his clients. This included ADHD, hyperactivity, autoimmune diseases, and addiction.
However, his life changed radically when he began to experience his own sadness, had to address his marital problems, and began to struggle to find help. At some point, he began to realize that he had been traumatized early in life. His maternal grandparents were killed in Auschwitz, and his own father endured forced labor by the Nazi Party.
When he was 1-year old, he was put into the care of a stranger to save his life, but even when he was returned to his mother, he could barely look at her. He felt an intense sense of abandonment, anger, and despair, which he then unconsciously projected onto his own family, especially his wife. Maté’s addiction was to work and led to a general detachment in all of his associations.
Healing Through Discovery
Seeking help wherever he could find it, he began exploring the use of ayahuasca at the Temple of the Way of Light. His process was under the tutelage of the Peruvian shamans who operated the Temple and met with them every six months for 10 years. At first, Maté was naturally motivated to heal from “his” personal trauma, but in the process, he discovered three important things.
First, he began to inquire into the question of “What is healing?” He recognized that he could not take for granted that he knew what healing was. So often, we think that we just need to be healed from whatever we are suffering from. We just want to be fixed so the pain goes away. But this is not sufficient. What is necessary is the development of a deeper understanding of the nature of the suffering. Secondly, as he experienced the ceremonies, he began to see that trauma of many kinds and types is universal. We all have them, as it is part of the human condition. Who among us never experiences pain and trauma? This is a leap in one’s thinking about one’s life.
Lastly, he saw that it is trauma itself that can catapult us into seeking a higher state of consciousness, the need to develop a bigger picture of what life itself is all about. Trauma can become useful and motivate us to become better human beings.
Astrological Insights and Chiron’s Influence
Astrologically, Maté’s Sun at 15° is an exact trine to Chiron at 15° Virgo. While there are other planets also aspecting Chiron, this is sufficient to make my point that Maté is truly an exemplary example of how we all might deal with our personal pain and trauma.
Chiron, to me, is the doorway to the outer planets of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. These archetypal forces have the potential of leading us to not just new experiences, but also to a new way of looking at who we are and what we are capable of. Uranus leads us towards discovering our own uniqueness, Neptune adds the paradox that we are all netted with each other and the world itself, and Pluto then pushes those who resonate with all I have said here with the need for a total transformation of one’s very being.
The questions for us all are this: are we ready to face the traumas of life and use them to grow and evolve? Are we willing to move into full presence with our lives as they really are and become conscious participants in them? We must use our life in every aspect of it so we not only move beyond our suffering but into a state of openness and immense, passionate creativity.

Symbolism of Taurus – The Bull
By Kimberly Maxwell
Art by Daniel Eskridge
Most people may know that the symbol for Taurus is a bull and that its glyph represents the bull’s head and horns. In astrology, there is also a deeper archetypal correlation between the nature of a bull and the sign of Taurus.
The bull has been considered a sacred animal since ancient times. It is an early example of how humans were able to domesticate animals to bring forth the potent life force of the earth. The mastery over the Bull’s nature allowed it to be used in agriculture in order to cultivate sufficient food which made the formation of stabilized communities possible. The bull therefore also became associated with prosperity and a sustained peaceful life.
In astrology, Taurus, which is an earth sign, is associated with strength, perseverance and a quiet sensual nature. Think of the classic image of a bull grazing peacefully in a pasture. The Taurus archetype can also be stubborn or “bull-headed” and even turn into a raging bull when provoked with the potential to cause much destruction, such as in a stampede or a bullfight.
Transpersonal Astrology regards Taurus as representing the second stage of individual growth. Following the powerful Aries drive of self-determination, Taurus is where a person begins the process of tending to its life force. The archetype of Taurus teaches us to harness the power of our instinctual nature through developing our talents and abilities as well as our values, which determines where we focus our energy.
The Sun’s Evolution Through the Zodiac Signs
By Carol Pilkington
Many people today are familiar with their astrological zodiac Sun signs, one of the “big 3” in astrology: the Sun, Moon, and Rising signs. Different forms of astrology place varying levels of significance on the Sun sign within the zodiac. Transpersonal Astrology, however, views the Sun sign as part of a holistic natal chart, a unique amalgamation of the archetypal building blocks underlying all of humanity.
The Nature of the Sun
The Sun represents what turns us on, lights us up, helps us feel alive, and gives us a sense of vitality and purpose. It is also what excites us and challenges us to grow. As the central force of our solar system, the Sun in astrology represents the energy that pushes and urges us to develop as autonomous individuals. It indicates where we must learn how and where to shine our light in whatever area of life we find ourselves.
