Musings on the Zodiac and Synchronicity

Volume 5 | How Meaningful Coincidences Can Shape Our Consciousness

So far, we’ve explored the uniquely personal spiritual paths that each of us might walk and how transpersonal astrology connects with the wisdom of depth psychology and science. We've shown how each natal astrology chart holds a destiny that transcends the individual.

This purpose includes understanding our own needs and motivations so we feel alive and vibrant. We’ve also spoken about archetypes, the universal forces that affect the human psyche and behavior on many levels, both consciously and unconsciously.

Today, we discuss synchronicity and introduce two new additions to the newsletter: a look at the transits and Musings on the Zodiac.

Astrological Transits for Today, June 26th

Astrological transits involve tracking the planets' movements as they travel through different areas of the sky.

Currently, there are six planets in water signs: the Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Cancer, while the Moon, Saturn, and Neptune are in Pisces.

It is unusual for only one element to dominate a horoscope, but when it does, it is helpful to be as aware as possible to prevent it from dominating one’s responses to daily life.

When water is dominant in the chart, it is a good time to explore emotions, as the water element is concerned with deep, sometimes unconscious feelings that might be submerged at other times.

With the Sun trining the Moon, there can be an easy flow of emotion. However, this can sometimes cause one to feel overwhelmed if one is not used to expressing these feelings to other people.

There is an exact square between the Moon and Jupiter in Gemini, which further amplifies the lunar feeling parts of our psyche. One is likely to be very sensitive to others and one’s environment. Having an outlet, whether through exercise or work, may be important now.

However, perhaps the best solution is to take time for meditation and contemplation to process what is arising deep within.

On Synchronicity

If you have ever used Tarot cards, the I-Ching, or explored Astrology, then you are already familiar, at least in practice, with the principle of synchronicity.

Dr. Carl Jung advanced this concept in the 20th century. He based many of his theories on it and wrote an introduction to the Wilhelm/Baynes translation of the I Ching. He also authored "Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle," which describes the efficacy of astrology.

Jung was the therapist for the renowned quantum physicist Wolfgang Pauli during a personal crisis after his mother’s suicide and his divorce. This unique collaboration between Jung and Pauli, a colleague of Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, led to important discoveries about the significance of dreams and synchronicity.

Jung and Pauli believed that both quantum physics and deep analysis of dreams reveal a deeper reality and cosmic order. This marked a unique moment in history when mysticism and science began to merge, a movement that continues to grow today.

Synchronicity

A concept introduced by analytical psychologist Carl Jung "to describe circumstances that appear meaningfully related yet lack a causal connection".

The Greek roots are syn-, meaning 'together,' and khronos, meaning 'time.' The relationship that exists when things occur at the same time.

Astrology and Synchronicity

Astrology fundamentally asserts that the map of where the planets are in the time and place of one’s birth becomes one’s basic nature and describes the very law of one’s being in the world. This is based on the principle of meaningful coincidences, or synchronicity. Accepting astrology means accepting synchronicity as real.

Challenge to Cause and Effect

Synchronicity questions the conventional notion of cause and effect. We assume our lives follow this rule—if I do this, then that will happen. Synchronicity challenges this, introducing a sense of awe and mystery. While cause and effect helps us learn and adapt, recognizing it’s not the whole story changes our perspective.

Openness to Mystery

Embracing life's mysteries, rather than seeking concrete predictions from astrology, fosters a profound sense of aliveness. This openness invites a deeper, more enriched experience, emphasizing the importance of free will in navigating the complexities of life.

Musings on the Zodiac

There are often negative stereotypes about signs, particularly Capricorn, Scorpio, and Taurus. However, one of the first experiences that surprised me about the nature of the Signs was in conversations with my colleagues.

The first person who made an impression on me had her Sun in Capricorn. She was, as one might expect, a very responsible employee and always on time in fulfilling her tasks. But she was also very kind, empathetic, and supportive. The more we got to know each other, the more open she became, and our friendship grew. From what I often read in Sun-sign astrology blogs, these characteristics are not mentioned.

Another example is the Sign of Cancer. It is often described as emotional, compassionate, and nurturing. While it certainly can be like this, there is more to it. I tried to get to know a Sun-in-Cancer colleague at my job in mental health, and since I have my Moon and Venus in Cancer, I thought we might become closer.

This was not the case, as he was very emotionally closed off, not just with me but with everyone on staff. This was the first time I realized how defensive and protective a Cancer can be. Often, Cancer must learn to be more open and not fear deeper human connections.

I am writing this to encourage astrology lovers to be wary of stereotyping people based on their Sun sign, and even on their general chart. This includes when we do synastry, or compatibility charts for couples. All astrology charts must be seen as indicators of potential. They are not concretely predictive.

Astrology can be a rich source of information that can help us along our path in life and also be a useful tool in guiding others. But, like any tool, it can also be used in a manner that is hurtful or even destructive. It is up to us how we use this wondrous, magickal field.
