The Power of the 1st Quarter Moon: A Call to Conscious Action
Volume 28 | Taking Action in the Taurus-Leo Cycle
Hi Everyone,
Although astrologers focus on both new and full Moon charts, I have found that including the 1st and 3rd Quarter phases in one’s interpretation is important if we want to get a full picture of the meaning of that particular soli-lunar cycle

The First Quarter Moon: A Crisis of Action
May 4 – Sun at 14° Taurus, Moon at 14° Leo
The new Moon for the present cycle occurred on April 27, 2025, at 7° Taurus. The essence of this soli-lunar cycle is to urge us to discover those issues which we must confront in order to create a stable, consistent, and grounded approach to our life.
To me, the sign of Taurus’ senses are heightened more than any other sign. They are delighted by the smells of flowers and the touch of the ground in which they are planted. It gives their life satisfaction and depth. It might seem simple to others, but to Taurus, it is their life’s blood.
To Taurus, the simple act of being grounded is their life’s blood.
A Call to Will
Now let’s look at how the impulse of the new Moon is growing. I think of the 1st Quarter Moon as a kind of crisis of action. By crisis, I mean that it requires an action on our part if we want the new seed born at the new Moon to actually grow and manifest something in our world. On May 4th, we have the 1st Quarter Moon when the Sun is at 14° Taurus and the Moon is at 14° Leo. What kind of action is needed now?
Leo rules the principle of creativity and the outpouring of one’s ‘Will’ into our world. The reason why I wrote the word Will in capitals is because this form of activity demands a conscious decision on our part. Yes, it is partially due to it being a necessity, but what determines how necessary it is for us depends on our assessment of what we regard as the most important thing.
This is Will in action.
Now is a good time to discover and act on those specific areas of our life we know to be vital for our growth and necessary to fulfill our roles in the world. In other words, now we must decide and then act!
Supporting and Healing Aspects
There are two other aspects in the sky that can clarify what we must consider now. There is a Venus/Neptune conjunction in early Aries which asks us to allow our imagination to be free. We can allow our dreams of what we want to be to run wild… knowing that the emphasis of grounded Taurus will pull us back from impractical, wasteful activity. There can be balance between risk-taking and absurd decisions. There’s no better transit to adopt a 'go for it' attitude.
The second aspect is a Mercury/Chiron conjunction also in Aries. To me, Chiron is not merely the wounded healer. It is also where we must act to find ways to heal. What actions can we take to bring about healing for ourselves and others? Answers to this question will appear to us if we are bold enough to imagine and then act upon what we feel we need. The image of the ‘Hail Mary’ comes to mind.
Healing begins when we dare to imagine and act.
Question to ask oneself
What must I do now to move forward on the things that matter most in my life so a practical result is achieved?

05/04/25 – 8:14 pm – slowing Moon waxing fire trine Mercury
This is another review of recent actions trine. What actions did you take today or this weekend? Note that the fire element is generally considered to represent our spirit, our beliefs and what moves us while Mercury symbolizes how we think and communicate. Are you happy or at least satisfied with what you have done over the past couple of days? Was there something that you intended to do, but didn’t get done? If so, put it on your “to do” list for tomorrow or next weekend.
05/04/25 – 9:43 pm – slowing Moon waxing sextile Jupiter
This is their first aspect since their conjunction on April 30. What new things have you started since then? How are they developing? Time to plan what your next actions should be to keep things moving forward.
05/05/25 – 6:03 am – slowing Moon goes Void-of-Course
Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! It is Monday and while there will only be two exact major aspects today, there will be four inconjunct/quincunx aspects which may lend an element of uncertainty or surprise to the day.
Following a waxing fixed crisis of action square to Uranus, the Moon goes void-of-course for over 6 1/2 hours. It is Monday and another day that starts with a crisis of action square. Between Uranus and the quincunxes, this could be a day of unpredictability. It probably won’t matter if you have your “head on a swivel” or not as things may happen that you just won’t see coming. Be extra aware and cautious of your surroundings as there is a higher potential for sudden accidents.
With the Moon void-of-course, if you can, focus on work in progress and set aside any new things until after lunch, when the Moon is in mutable earth Virgo.
Not quite 3 1/2 hours later (9:24 am), the Moon will make a waxing inconjunct/ quincunx to Saturn. Saturn likes structure and predictability, but there is the element of surprise hovering around today. Pay attention to all laws, rules, instructions and requirements for whatever you may be doing; otherwise, Saturn may “surprise” you with a harsh reminder that you forgot something, perhaps with a speeding ticket or some other “violation.”
