The Nature of Synchronicity: How Meaning Finds Us
Volume 29 | Synchronicity and Astrology
Hi Everyone,
This volume explores something often felt but rarely explained: synchronicity. Those moments that align just right, not because of cause and effect, but because of what they mean to us. They ask for our attention.
This article looks at synchronicity as central to understanding astrology as a language of the present moment.

The Nature of Synchronicity
I first encountered the term synchronicity when I began studying the work of Carl Jung. He described it as an experience that is not just a coincidence but a meaningful one.
These moments can feel so significant that a person might sense something magical is happening — as if God just spoke to them and sent a message they must hear and apply. There is often a sense of urgency and demand. Perhaps it’s a warning or a bad omen, but more often it’s a nudge to pay attention and examine something.
He described it as an experience that is not just a coincidence but a meaningful one.
From Rare Event to Recurring Pattern
At first, I thought such events were very rare, but over time, this view changed. Certainly, the striking ones really say “sit up and listen,” while others are more subtle — often totally mysterious.
The nature of synchronous experiences is that their interpretation is entirely ours to make. No one else can do it for us. The reason is that they are so personal and resonant to that specific moment. Even though they can be interpreted in many ways, what’s important is that they make sense to us.
What’s special about this type of experience is that it lifts us up, propelling us away from nihilism, hopelessness, and boredom. There’s a wow factor — more like WOW!
Making Meaning: A Personal Experience
I discovered that the more I noticed these events, the more they seemed to happen. The skeptic in me doubted whether my interpretation of them as significant was real. I thought I might just be making it up. Yet I also doubted that was true. You might say I doubted my doubt. I’ve come to see that this reaction is quite natural and actually kept me from going overboard.
What did occur was that the more I paid attention to this phenomenon, a more subtle effect took place: the act of noticing began to affect my awareness in general. I was becoming self-aware — not in the egoic sense of self-importance, but the opposite of that. These experiences were so personal, so clearly just for me, that I became aware of my unique individuality — and at the same time, of being an inextricable part of the universe.
In a sense, I was the universe too. Both were true at the same time. The more I experienced this, the more I saw it happening, and the more my awareness increased. In fact, it was accelerating. I began to feel less in control, but more guided toward something. I was becoming more curious and interested — in my life and in life in general.
These experiences were so personal, so clearly just for me, that I became aware of my unique individuality — and at the same time, of being an inextricable part of the universe.
At the same time, it was affecting all my relationships. It seemed to attract people who were happier and led the negative ones to drift away. This state of being also shaped the students who began to show up in my astrology and spiritual classes — people who were experiencing this phenomenon too. Most of all, it changed how I saw astrology itself.
Now we can get to the point of this article: the connection between synchronicity and astrology.
Each Moment as a Living Map
The horoscope is literally a map of the planets at a particular moment in time. While it is constantly changing as time moves, each map is distinct — like no other moment. This means that the potentials and possibilities of each chart are unique to that specific time.
The only conclusion I can make is that astrology is the art of interpreting the unique nature of each moment. While this may seem obvious, I’ve found that it’s often not consciously recognized. But to recognize it can open us to the wonder and mystery of being alive. To discover this is to see that life is totally synchronous…all the time.
Can we make this concept real to ourselves? If we do, what does that mean about our nature — about who we are? Something to sit with as you move through the week — feel free to reply with what comes up.
