The Healing Powers of Chiron

My personal experience with Chiron has been one of “being late to the party.” Chiron is a minor planet and comet in the solar system, located between Saturn and Uranus. In Greek mythology, Chiron was considered the greatest among the centaurs, known as the wisest and most just of all.

Chiron was discovered in 1977, a discovery that was synchronous with the emergence of transpersonal psychology and astrology. This period also coincided with the release of the first Star Wars movie, which was greeted with enthusiasm, in some cases even before people watched the film. Something about this movie resonated with people in a historic way.

The Nature of Chiron

I was first introduced to Chiron in the early 90s when I attended a lecture on Chiron that described its nature as “the wounded healer.” I was struck by the fact that a deep dive into what a “wound” is was not examined. Since Chiron exists in every chart, the nature of the wound must be universal, a part of human existence for all of us.

This universal aspect of Chiron’s nature was further illuminated when Zane Stein introduced the idea that Chiron acts as a bridge to a state of “wholeness.” In other words, the nature of healing is inextricably linked to an increase in the quality of one’s consciousness. So again, we find that there is a universal aspect to the nature of healing.

The Nature of Healing

The pivotal shift for me came with my discovery of the works of Gabor Maté. For him, healing meant moving into a new state of consciousness. He even suggested that trauma itself propels us to want to make this shift. Maté spent ten years working with shamans in Peru, using ayahuasca to address his workaholic nature, which was damaging his relationships with his wife, family, and patients.

From my personal experience and my work with clients, I have found that it is often the very traumas of one’s life that prompt a person to view their life in a new way. Without a significant level of anxiety or fear, people often continue their lives as if everything is fine. However, when a crisis occurs, we might become open to new ways of thinking about our lives.

The Transpersonal Approach

From a transpersonal astrological perspective, I regard the outer planets of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto as transcendent in nature. They bring us to new levels of awareness and understanding and even shift how we think about who we are and the purpose of our lives. To me, it is Chiron that creates the bridge to these new levels. We can use our personal areas of pain and suffering to motivate us to explore the new realms of being that are available to all of us.

Symbolism of Aries – The Ram

It's common knowledge that Aries is symbolized by the Ram. But what does this symbol mean, and how does it fit with the Aries zodiac archetype?

Since ancient times, the ram has been a symbol of strength and independence. The visual evokes the magnificent spiraling horns of these creatures, known for butting their heads against other rams during mating season to establish their dominance and virility.

How does this fit in with astrology? Aries is courageous, competitive and known for confronting challenges head-on. The Sun enters Aries, a fire sign, at the Spring equinox, correlating to the push of creative energy required for new birth. Just as rams fight for their right to create new life in the spring, so must the newborn human be inspired by Aries fire to ignite its desire to thrive and continue to be reignited from cycle to cycle throughout its life.

From a transpersonal astrology perspective Aries is driven by its desires, which correlates to a tremendous desire for self-determination and to create its life, just as the head-strong ram has the powerful drive necessary to establish its place among its challengers. Aries initiates us into the archetypal process of the Hero’s Journey to experience directly our own authentic being and discover what we are here to create in this life.

Inspiration for your Journey

As we discussed in our synchronicity volume, the entire principle of astrology relies on the idea of synchronicity. Carl Jung wrote a book on the matter and invited us to observe this in our existence. Here is a video by Metanoia Pathways that I feel further unpacks this concept well.
