Kamala Harris’s Solar Return & Aquarius Symbolism Explored
Volume 18 | Solar Return Insights and a Deeper Look at the Aquarius Archetype
Following Vice President Kamala Harris's birthday last weekend, we’re taking a closer look at what her year ahead might hold based on her solar return chart. Plus, we’ll also examine the symbolism of Aquarius.
Kamala Harris’s Solar Return for the Year Ahead
When I look at a chart to understand the direction of life situations, my first priority is to examine the transits for that individual, followed by an analysis of secondary progressions, and finally the Solar Return. However, there are exceptional cases where the Solar Return alone can offer significant insight.
An example of this is Kamala Harris’s Solar Return chart, which you will find below.

In this chart, she has the rising sign in Capricorn, with its ruler, Saturn, positioned in the second house of values and responsibility, trining Mercury in Scorpio in the 10th house, very close to her Midheaven. Any planet near the Midheaven in such a chart indicates a strong emphasis on communicating one’s ideas in the public sphere. With this trine to Saturn, the chart ruler, she will likely feel compelled to convey her practical vision (in Pisces) to the public. This interpretation is reinforced by Venus in Sagittarius in the 11th house of hopes and dreams trining the North Node in bold and courageous Aries, located in the 3rd house of communication. When I observe the same theme recurring in a chart, it often supports the likelihood of that theme being influential in that person’s life during the year.
Another aspect highlighting the emphasis of this chart is her Sun (always the ruler of the Solar Return chart) trining Jupiter in Gemini in the 6th house, suggesting a daily focus on legal and legislative matters.
Finally, it is noteworthy that her Sun squares Mars in Cancer in the 7th house. This house is often paradoxical; while it is typically associated with partnerships, it is also known as the house of open (or known) enemies. If she were to assume the presidency, it’s clear she would face consistent opposition from the Republican Party at every turn. She could expect battle after battle during at least her first year in office, and possibly longer.
Considering all these factors, my interpretation is that she is likely to win the election but will encounter persistent challenges in her efforts to enact the policies she is campaigning on. I welcome insights from others, as astrology is an interpretive art rather than an objective science.
Consider that the nature of our real consciousness is analogous to an iceberg, where one can only see a very small portion of the whole at the tip, while hiding below is a huge, mysterious mass that supports the entire system. The word “system” suggests there are principles that control how and when the submerged aspects of our consciousness emerge.
Oftentimes in society, these forces rise from the depths in uncontrolled ways due to the degree to which the real forces controlling it are ignored, denied, and avoided. Of course, the same is true for the individual, though it is the individual who may have some degree of control, not over these forces, but over one’s willingness to confront them, if one is willing to make a conscious effort.
Symbolism of Aquarius

The ancient symbol for Aquarius is The Water Bearer. This may seem odd for an air sign but note it is actually a person holding a container filled with water and pouring it out. Air signs represent ideas and connecting with others through communication. Water is symbolic of consciousness and enlightenment. The vessel represents the ability to contain and focus consciousness. On an archetypal level, the Water Bearer is a humble servant, holding a sacred vessel, performing a sacred act that serves a divine purpose – bringing the power of consciousness to humanity. The Aquarius glyph with two identical wavy lines represents water currents. Their placement one above the other evokes the hermetic principle “as above, so below,” meaning there is a correspondence between the whole of the cosmos and physical reality animated by the consciousness flowing between them.
These potent symbols are true to the Aquarius nature associated with visionary ideas that better humanity. Aquarius needs to feel connected to a broad social network but also needs absolute freedom to express its unique nature. It maintains a sense of detachment so it can form unbiased perspectives, unshackled from tradition, and focus its creative efforts into innovations that move society forward. Aquarius ruler Uranus is known as a disruptive force that ensures necessary change continues to happen. Paradoxically, this fixed sign is a change agent, but it is immovable on what matters most – humanity’s survival.
In Transpersonal Astrology, Aquarius plays a pivotal role in the individual developmental process. After reaching the heights of personal achievement and depths of wisdom and maturity, Aquarius teaches us it is imperative to focus our mature creative power through the enlightened lens of cosmic consciousness. Should the use of power not be safely managed for the benefit of the whole of humanity, it could be unleashed to enrich only an individual or limited group, and lead to destructive results for everyone else. Aquarius calls each of us to consciously bear the responsibility of infusing our personal creative power with cosmic consciousness in service to all of humanity. Living this way is a sacred act of Love. It is our evolutionary purpose.
