How-to Experience Any Astrological Concept

One of the best experiences in studying astrology is to actually feel its aliveness, which means taking it beyond just the mind.

In other words, it is not merely a field of study that is restricted to just the intellectual level. It has the potential of becoming much more. For this to occur one’s approach must change significantly.

The most important shift must be that a person must learn to hold the question or concept in one’s mind with openness and a sense of mystery.

We are attempting to receive information from the cosmic principles themselves, thus the only thing we can know if that this type of information will be totally new to us. Here are the steps for how one might do this:

  1. One must start by simply reading whatever book or source information one has access to, as there is more astrological information available to us than ever before. Look up the signs, planets, or houses and just read all you can about them.

  2. The next step is to look at the charts of people you already know and see the concept operating within them. It is vital that one begins to see how an astrological concept is actually working in a particular person.

  3. The third step may seem quite odd. Now one must allow the new information to unfold within them. This is a kind of passive action that has a very specific purpose. Astrology concepts are more real than one can easily accept, so now the concepts must move into the subconscious, where they will continue to operate within us. At this point, we are simply “sitting with” the question. We may believe we aren’t doing anything, but my experience is that something vital is happening, even though we don’t see it yet.

  4. Now we wait for it to reveal itself to us. We cannot control this process. We can only expose ourselves to it. As ideas begin to come into our awareness, we can take notes or do anything that allows us to consciously acknowledge the new information. We should not be judgmental at this time. What we are seeking now is to receive new information. We are not yet able to assess the value of the new information.

  5. The last step is to use any revelations we receive to take us to new or deeper ones. Now the information that is being birthed into our subconscious reverses and begins to become conscious. The true meaning of revelation is to have some idea or concept be revealed to us. Once this process begins, we are now able to begin the process of deepening it.

For me, this is a never-ending process of discovery. With astrology, we are gazing into the cosmic mind of universal archetypal forces that few people ever expose themselves to.

It can be exciting and oftentimes very exciting. It is so vital to remain as open as possible for astrology to work its magick within our very “soul.”

Astrology Q + A

Are Astrology and Astronomy the Same?

No, astrology and astronomy are not the same. However, historically, there is an interesting connection between the two.

With computers and the internet, we have become accustomed to inputting our birth data into a program or app, which generates our chart in less than a second. In the past, however, astrologers had to be astronomers first. They had to create all the tables necessary to generate any chart.

In fact, in the 1600s, Johannes Kepler and Tycho Brahe—two of the most influential astronomers of the late Renaissance period—competed against each other to see who could produce the most accurate tables for creating astrological horoscopes.

Symbolism of Cancer – The Crab

By Kimberly Maxwell

Art by Daniel Eskridge

The archetypal essence of Cancer, developed from ancient times, is deeply embedded in humanity’s psyche. Cancer is symbolized by the crab and its glyph represents the crab’s arms and claws, which are used to tenaciously hold onto things, nourish itself and defend from attacks. The crab’s hard shell protects its delicate internal organs, and their highly effective hair-like sensors and antennae help them navigate hazardous environments. The crab aptly evokes Cancer’s nature that creates firm safety boundaries and intuitively feels its way through life’s challenges, sensing whether it needs to fiercely defend or can safely reveal its deeply sensitive inner life.

Cancer’s ruling planet is the Moon, which constantly changes shape, disappearing then growing to fullness each month as it affects the ebb and flow of tides. Crabs reflect this changeability: they scuttle about, advancing, retreating, or averting sideways, and can live underwater or on land.

The Cancer nature is equally in tune with the rhythms and cycles of life, feeling most at home in the depths of interior feelings, while developing strength to rise in perpetual rebirth to face each day as it comes. Perhaps because Cancer feels the harshness of life all too well is why it is also associated with nurturing and protecting the innocent young.

From the Transpersonal Astrology perspective, the danger we face in the life arena of our birth chart governed by Cancer, a water sign, is in losing ourselves in acute sensitivity and emotions and becoming unmoored in fear of life’s complexity and overwhelming challenges.

The answer to our need for strength to harness the potential of each day is to discover where we belong in the greater collective of humanity and find our anchor in the vast ocean of cosmic consciousness. We must have faith in our own divinity and activate our innate psychic ability to visualize our role as a unique co-participant in the greater Whole of existence. Ultimately, we must hold tenaciously onto the realization that in our most essential root of existence we are the divine expressing.
