Fate or Free Will? What does astrology imply?

We have reached a point in our newsletter journey where we are exploring one of the most essential aspects of life and astrology: fate versus free will. We hope you enjoy this volume and welcome your questions or comments. I look forward to hearing your viewpoints.

One of the most interesting and difficult topics in philosophy and neuroscience is the question of how much free will anyone has.

Sam Harris, a renowned philosopher and neuroscientist, has taken this question seriously for his entire life. On one hand, he considers himself to be an atheist and believes we do not have free will, but he is also seeking a spiritual solution to these questions.

However, when we begin to add astrology to this question, even more questions arise as to how much free will we really have, and if so, where do we find it.

Free Will and Astrology

Astrology is a model that assumes there is a restriction on who and what an individual is or can be. It is a type of rule-set that does limit us in many ways. And yet astrologers do believe we have free will. How we reconcile this is important.

To me, Transpersonal Astrology requires that we look at this deeply and does so by emphasizing the importance of recognizing the value of uncertainty.

The Value of Uncertainty

Not only is uncertainty a real aspect of life, but it is where we will find our freedoms. The conscious realization of this is one of the main ways in which our consciousness can shift towards an evolutionary way of being. Instead of being either an annoyance or something that terrifies us, we now can see that it is the very condition needed to evolve and grow.

When this begins to be understood, we are faced with a new and important set of questions. Once we know that we are under a set of limitations (which biology itself also recognizes), then we can begin to explore where opportunities for free choices exist and how to increase them.

These must include considering how we can attract the best quality opportunities and challenges as well as how we might best meet these.

Interpreting Natal Charts

This takes us directly into how the transpersonal astrologer interprets a person’s natal chart and the difficult transits, returns, and progressions each of us must face at various times in our lives.

Instead of regarding these as merely something to “get through while we wait for it to be over,” we can instead help the client to reorient towards how to best confront and creatively work with them.

This is how the astrologer must approach all of their interpretations. In order to do this, the astrologer must consider how to engage with the client rather than focus on the monologue approach where the astrologer tells the person what the transits are and what might likely occur.

Managing Expectations

One of the issues the astrologer must face now is the possible expectations of the client. While most people believe they have free will, their awareness of this can eerily disappear when in the presence of the psychic or astrologer.

There is often an unconscious desire to find some sense of certainty, even though they want to have free will. What this means is that the consultation with an astrologer must include clarifying and managing any expectations the person might have and help them discover what they might be and see a new way of approaching them.

For a person to feel truly empowered, this is necessary even if they continue to feel afraid of what might be coming into their life. This must include helping the person recognize that empowerment is connected to one’s taking full responsibility for their choices both past and present.

The Gift of Uncertainty

The existential truth we must all face is the gift of uncertainty, for this is exactly where our freedoms lie. It is how we are able to make new types of choices that will set us on a completely new course that is entirely different from our past programming and conditioning.

While it can be difficult to face the unknown, without it we would be completely stuck in the old patterns. Life itself increases within us as we consciously embrace the uncertainties we all have. Astrology can be used to help us do this.

The Inspiration Behind My Astrology Book

I was a therapist long before I began to study astrology. This turns out to be an advantage for me as the way I learned astrology was to combine reading books about astrology and then applying these new concepts to the clients with whom I was working.

This was a great way to learn astrology. However, what I discovered was that astrologers and clients both had the expectation that astrology could make concrete predictions about what will or will not happen.

Not only is this approach impossible to do, but it will block the great value that astrology might give us if we use it in a different way.

To share these insights, I wrote Astrology as a Spiritual Path: Birth of the New Human. This book explores how astrology can be an inspiring tool for personal transformation and spiritual growth.

The book is available now on Amazon.
