New Moon in Cancer: A Call to Feel and Remain Open
Volume 31: Vulnerability, Survival, and the Soli-Lunar Reset
Hi Everyone,
One of the most important cycles in astrology to observe is the soli-lunar cycle that occurs each month. Not only does it set the tone for that month, but it may add a new wrinkle that could amplify its intensity. This cycle does exactly that. On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 3:31 AM PDST, the new Moon took place at 4° Cancer. In addition, the planet of new opportunities, Jupiter, is in a close conjunction at 3° Cancer.

Cancer’s Tender Core: Nurture, Defense, and the Need for Safety
In Cancer, we tend to focus on all the aspects of life that nurture and support us, especially emotionally. It might be with home and family, but also how we take care of ourselves. It’s all about emotional comfort, as one Cancerian put it.
However, unlike more sociable Libra, this Cancer may be more insular, needing to go within its tight circle of nurturing family or those who feel like family. All signs have their shadow side, and Cancer is no exception. Perhaps Cancer is the most defensive of all the signs of the zodiac. We associate Cancer with the crab, who has the hard shell protecting its tender and vulnerable body. Psychologically, this is true in Cancer more than any other sign. There can be a tremendous fear of being vulnerable and open to attack. This is why it exhibits such nesting instincts.
Cancer Without the Need for a Protective Shell
I have my Moon and Venus in Cancer and can personally attest to having all of the things I have written here, but I have discovered an important thing that surprised me. At a very vulnerable time in my life when I lost everything I identified with, including my family, I was devastated emotionally. After a year of this despair, I noticed something odd. I still remember the moment when I realized I was still breathing. Such an odd thing to express, isn’t it? It meant that I had survived the worst thing I could imagine.
Suddenly, my sense of extreme vulnerability was gone. My need to protect myself was still there, of course, but it was much less, and what replaced it was a sense of being much more open to life. The shell was gone, but “I” was here in the world with all of its wonder. My emotions could be expressed more than before. I was living in a totally new way. I don’t even feel vulnerable expressing all this to my readers. Hopefully, many of you might be encouraged to take a leap into your areas of sensitivity so you might find out that you don’t need the protective shell as much as you thought you did.
The New Moon Conjuncts Jupiter Sextiles Mars in Virgo
Back to this new Moon. I mentioned that this new Moon conjuncts Jupiter. There is a wonderful promise that the more we are willing to express our emotional needs to others, the more we will experience the warmth of others' love for us. It will be much easier than usual to take that fearful step of openness so we might see the shell is not needed at all. And if we are rejected, instead of taking it personally, we might just accept it and move on.
This particular new Moon sextiles Mars in Virgo. Mars rules how we take action and what motivates us, while Virgo urges us to focus on practical, down-to-earth solutions. Together, this new Moon cycle will find ways to act on the urge to support and nurture those we care for and love. Because of the Virgo tendency to be critical of both oneself and others, it is crucial we confront this so our desire to truly help others will be met in a positive way.
If we become defensive when our solutions aren’t embraced, this entire Moon cycle will be disappointing and we can easily become discouraged and resentful. Blaming oneself and/or others can create a down spiral and lead to misery. In other words, we must focus on helping without attachment and accept others as they are.
It will be much easier than usual to take that fearful step of openness so we might see the shell is not needed at all.
There is another aspect that is paradoxical in itself and with the Cancer new Moon. There is a Saturn/Neptune conjunction in Aries which can be quite confounding. I will be writing an article on this single topic so I can go into depth on it.

06/27/25 – 12:13 am – slowing (OOBn) Moon conjunct Mercury
It is another busy morning as this is the first of five exact major aspects, four of them before 5 am, today. If you get to sleep through this barrage, fortunate you. If not, be sure to note what woke you, the time and as much detail as you can.
When the Moon and Mercury get together, it can be a perfect time for a “gab fest” with like-minded friends over late night treats. Who would you want to share this with and what would be your preferred treat?
Less than two hours later (2:04 am), the slowing (OOBn) Moon will make a waxing fire trine to shadow Saturn for the second aspect of the day. This is the first of two of these that symbolize a time to pause and review of any recent actions. Perhaps the realization that you forgot to do or finish something will wake you. If so, whatever it may be, be sure to note it so you won’t forget to do it in the morning.
Just 26 minutes later (2:30 am), the Moon will return in-bounds. Back in the boundaries of the Sun, people who may have been acting up or out may start to seem to be more in control. Are you one of them? If so, note the potential correlation between your feelings and the out of bounds Moon.
Just 20 minutes later (2:50 am), the Moon will make Her second waxing fire trine, this time to Neptune for the third aspect of the day. Will Neptune dissolve walls that may have been preventing you from seeing the truth or will He try to hide it from you with His fog? Trust your instinct. You decide which it is.
06/27/25 – 4:39 am – slowing Moon fixed opposition retrograde Pluto
This fourth aspect opposition is from the Moon in fixed fire Leo and retrograde Pluto in fixed air Aquarius. Fire and Air signs are always opposite each other. To maintain a safe fire requires the right mix of both. Without enough air, the fire will go out. With too much air, the fire may get out of control. Maintaining your balance to be most effective would seem to be the “order of the day.” This is also the last aspect until this evening, so this morning’s energies should carry through for most of the day.
06/27/25 – 8:53 pm – Mercury waxing fire trine shadow Saturn
This, the fifth and final aspect today, marks Mercury’s turn at a double waxing fire trine, first to Saturn and then tomorrow morning to Neptune. Perhaps, take time tonight to review what you have done today and what you still have to do by the end of the month. Make a plan for what you will start with tomorrow and what else you should or need to do.
